Derek is an Educational Development Specialist primarily serving the following departments across multiple colleges: Applied Design, Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Economics, Finance, Banking, & Insurance, Marketing & Supply Chain Management, Management, Computer Science, Rec Management & Physical Education, Physics & Astronomy, Sustainable Tech & the Built Environment, Theatre & Dance.
Derek supports faculty in the design, devlopment and delivery of courses including (but not limited to) the use of technology for teaching at Appalachian State University.
Previously, at the University of Kentucky, he served as Sr. Faculty Instructional Consultant for the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) and as the Director of Online Education for the College of Arts and Sciences and has worked with a variety of corporate and government clients as an Instructional Designer/Learning Consultant. His experience as a learning consultant combined with a background in industrial technology and engineering design provide a diverse skillset to compliment the CETLSS team at Appalachian.
Derek earned a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Instruction and Administration within the Instructional Systems Design program at the University of Kentucky, a M.S. in Industrial Technology from Purdue, and a B.S. in Engineering Design Technology from East Tennessee State University. Derek regularly teaches IND-3911/3011 focused on CAD/CAM for product design majors in the Department of Applied Design in addition to other experimental courses. His interests include project based learning, digital design and fabrication, and environmental stewardhip; as, he regularly enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, and white water kayaking with his family and friends.
