Bryan is an Educational Development Specialist who supports various Appalachian Learning Communities, including the Online Teaching Community, conducts one-on-one consultations, and leads departmental and university-wide workshops and other programming in the Center. His primary goal is to help faculty achieve their instructional goals and feel good about their teaching!

He is a Mountaineer through and through, having received his B.S. in History, Social Studies Education from App State. He taught high school social studies and CTE courses for several years in North Carolina and Virginia, gleaning the value of relationships, learning environments, and best pedagogical practices. His natural interest in classroom technology led him to pursue further education on the topic. In 2020, he graduated from James Madison University with an M.Ed. in Educational Technology. In his Master’s program, he focused on flipped learning, student motivation, and classroom technology implementation.

Most recently, Bryan has served as an Instructional Designer at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He has worked with dozens of faculty from countless disciplines to design and develop excellent online courses. Using backward design principles, he has learned that students will always benefit from learning experiences designed to help them achieve relevant and meaningful goals and objectives. He has also spent extensive time researching the functionality and practicality of various educational technology tools.

Passionate about the field of education, Bryan enjoys supporting educators in every stage of their journey, from pre-service teachers to veteran faculty. His interests include fostering student motivation, purposefully implementing technology, and applying research-based strategies to design, develop, and implement learning experiences. When he’s not trying out new technology tools or listening to podcasts, Bryan can be found enjoying the High Country with his family.
