Spring into Summer with CETLSS Writing and Creatives Retreats
The AppState Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Student Success (CETLSS) regularly hosts (mostly virtual) retreats to support faculty writing, research, and scholarly activity.
The retreats will be offered as a “hybrid” opportunity to accomplish your research and scholarly activity goals among colleagues. We will begin each day with a Zoom check in, where you can meet colleagues, share or learn a helpful strategy, and record some goals for the day before working in a creative space of your choice (e.g., home, campus, maker space, studio, or library). At the end of each day, we will gather again in Zoom to share, document, and celebrate our accomplishments.
Writing Retreat
May 16-19, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Whatever your writing goals, working among like-minded colleagues for a focused and dedicated amount of time can give you the momentum to start, re-organize, revise, or complete a project. After setting and sharing goals at the start of each day, we will work for extended blocks of time. Members of the RCOE Mentoring Guild will be helping to facilitate this retreat and will share quick writing stories and tips at the start of each day.
Throughout the week, you will have opportunities to consult with colleagues from the Office of Research and University Libraries for any funding or research/library services you may need.
Participants will meet as follows from 8:30 am-2:30pm
This gathering provides an opportunity to meet others and learn about the collective research interests of your colleagues. After our opening meeting, you may stay in the zoom room to write or leave and come back for our closing session each afternoon, whatever is best for your writing practice and task.
It would be helpful for our planning if you register for the University Writing Retreat by Tuesday, May 2.
Creatives Retreat
May 22-25, 8:30-2:30 p.m.
The diverse faculty at Appalachian State is comprised of artists, photographers, sculptors, media makers, creators, composers, performers (dancers, vocalists, instrumentalists, and conductors) and academicians (theorists, historians, educators, therapists, and industry professionals). Therefore, the nature of scholarly and creative activity carried out by the faculty is diverse. Further, some faculty members teach in both academic and performance areas and, thus, may have a combination of scholarly and creative activities.
We recognize that scholarly activity, creative activity, and professional development enable faculty to remain current in their areas of specialization. Creative activities are highly regarded because (a) faculty members serve as important role models for students, (b) such activity is of utmost importance in developing a strong recruitment base, and (c) this activity supports the University’s core value of supporting “faculty excellence in teaching and all forms of scholarship.”
It would be helpful for our planning if you register for the Creatives Retreat by Tuesday, May 9.
