Dr. Katrina Palmer is a Professor and Transfer Director in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. As the Transfer Director for the department, she coordinates events for new and potential transfers and advocates for the unique needs of transfer students. Dr. Palmer also serves as a Co-PI on the NSF supported S-STEM grant whose purpose is to attract academically gifted students who need financial assistance and intend on majoring in a STEM discipline. Additionally, she helped start the SOAR Summer Bridge Program to help underprepared incoming freshmen in math and chemistry, which is currently operating in its second year. She has over 20 years of teaching experience ranging from middle school to graduate level courses. Dr. Palmer has taught several types of courses during her time at Appalachian including a first-year seminar course on mathematics and sustainability. She is particularly interested in engaging her students with sustainability topics. Her mathematics interests lie in numerical linear algebra applied to astronomical and medical imaging.
