Denise Cowardin is an Instructional Design Specialist, primarily supporting the faculty in the College of Health Sciences in their instructional design and instructional technology  support needs.  Denise's interests include Universal Design for Learning, open pedagogy and online course redesign. Prior to joining Appalachian State in 2021, Denise worked in instructional design and instructional technology support at Elon University, Guilford College, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, bringing over 25 years of higher education experience to the team.

Denise received her B.A from UNC Chapel Hill in International Relations, with a concentration in Eastern European Politics and Russian.  She worked in the software field for several years before returning to school to receive her M.Ed. in Instructional Technology and Design from the University of Pittsburgh and has also received a Certificate in Computer Based Instruction from ECU.
