Welcome Rachel Clark! New Instructional Technology Consultant for the CAE

The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) is pleased to announce that Rachel Clark is our newest team member.  Rachel is hired as an Instructional Technology Consultant with a specialty in online course development and Quality Matters.  She will primarily help support the College of Arts & Sciences, but her talents will be utilized for many initiatives. She helps Appalachian’s faculty and staff with technologies that support learning and teaching and consults in best teaching practices.

Prior to coming to the CAE, she spent 12 years as faculty in Appalachian’s Professional Writing program teaching Business Writing to students in Appalachian’s Walker College of Business. Ten of those years were spent researching and experimenting with online teaching in its various modalities, during which time her passion for the intersection of technology and teaching excellence was born. She also spent three of those years as Assistant Director of Appalachian’s Summer Reading Program.

Rachel holds certifications as both a Quality Matters (QM) Peer Reviewer and an instructor of QM’s flagship course, Applying the QM Rubric, and taught Appalachian’s inaugural Applying the QM Rubric course to faculty across the university in 2017. She has done successful grant writing for online course development. She holds two master’s degrees, an M.Ed. in English Education from the University of Georgia and an M.A. in English from Appalachian State, and is part of North Carolina State’s graduate certificate program in e-learning and educational technology.

Prior to academia, she had a career in news writing during which, with no formal journalism training, she worked her way from freelancing for a rural weekly to a position as the full-time education reporter for the second largest newspaper in Georgia.

In her spare time, Rachel likes yoga, meditation, contra dancing and hiking.

We are happy to have her join the team!
