Instructional Design Specialist
Sarah is an Instructional Design Specialist working as the primary lead for supporting the College of Business, College of Health Sciences, and University Libraries.Prior to her current role, Sarah spent three years as the Director of the General Biology Program here at Appalachian State. During this time she developed a fully online lab course for non-majors (pre-pandemic) and has since created fully online lecture and lab courses for the general biology program. It was during this time her passion for excellence in teaching with technology took off, and she became a leader in the Biology Department in online modalities. Sarah has worked as a faculty champion and coach over the past year, assisting faculty with transitioning their courses to online delivery.
Sarah has earned several online certifications, including the Quality Matters Teaching Online Certificate and Peer Reviewer Certification, OLC Online Science Labs Mastery Series, and the Moodle Educator Certification. Recently she presented her work with online virtual labs at the UNC’s Digital Learning Seminar Series and was part of the UNC System’s project to create a repository of open-source materials for use in online course delivery. Sarah is also a strong advocate for Team-Based Learning and leads a faculty learning community to faculty all over campus implement TBL into their classrooms.
She has a Ph.D. in Physiology and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Prior to coming to Appalachian State, Sarah served as the department chair of Biology at Stark State College in Ohio. She has been actively involved in developing and teaching online courses for over 10 years. When she's not on campus, Sarah enjoys hiking and spending time with her family.
